Let’s settle this.

When you ask an Italian, “Which part of Italy has the best food?”, they’ll almost always answer either “my city” or “the region I’m from” – depending on how territorial they are.

In that regard, San Marino is no different. We genuinely believe we have the best food on the Italian peninsula.
(Or dare I say... the world?)

Still, I’ll try to be as objective as I can in proving my point.

San Marino x Romagna = Culinary gold

Yes, San Marino is an independent country – but culturally, it shares deep roots with nearby Romagna, the eastern part of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.

Romagna has a fascinating history (it was once a Roman frontier, remember Ariminum? That’s Rimini today).
But we’re not doing a history lesson here. Let’s talk food.

Why San Marino and Romagna have the best food (Rational edition)

Let’s start with the facts:

📰 The Financial Times called Romagna “second to none” and “the cradle of Italian cuisine.”
🗞️ The Guardian said Emilia-Romagna is “one of the world’s top foodie regions.”
🍴 Gourmet Traveller crowned it “Italy’s gastronomic epicentre.”
📈 Forbes went all in: “Italy’s greatest gastronomic treasure.”
🗳️ Even NRN readers ranked Emilia-Romagna first in Italy (okay, tied with Sicily – transparency matters).

So… the data speaks for itself. But if that’s not enough...

Why Romagna has the best food (Emotional edition)

Let me hit you where it really matters: the stomach.

Here are just a few of the "heavyweights of Italian cuisine" that hail from Romagna:

That’s basically the holy trinity of fresh pasta.

And if that weren’t enough, Romagna also serves (in my opinion):

Buon appetito 🇸🇲

Lasagne
(yeah they're called Lasagne, not Lasagna)
Ravioli
(this one are with sage and butter, typical)
Tagliatelle
(number 1 dish in San Marino!)
The best seafood cuisine
(grigliata dell'Adriatico -Seafood grill)
The best fast food
(piadina... which was born here, obviously)

Where to try real Romagna classics

  1. Ritrovo dei Lavoratori

Tucked away in San Marino’s historic centre - just off the main streets - this cosy spot has been our go-to for authentic Romagna cuisine since our teenage years.

Start with the mixed antipasti (our top pick), then dive into some incredible pasta or a flavour-packed meat grill
- or both, if you're feeling indulgent!

Bonus: the setting is lovely, with charming views to match the food.

My favourite Pizza spot

  1. Insolito Posto

Located in Serravalle square, in the northern part of San Marino and within easy reach of Rimini, this pizza spot is perfect if you want to eat like a local and escape the main touristy areas.

It serves authentic Romagna-style pizza: slightly thinner than the usual, and generously topped.

Bonus: the restaurant’s name, Insolito Posto, literally means “Unusual Place”!

The best Piadina

  1. Il Mattarello

Located in Dogana, near Ausa Park and close to San Marino’s border, this casual spot is a great choice if you’re going for a walk or just passing by by car as you enter or leave the country.

It offers delicious piadine (our typical flatbread) and cascioni - similar to piadina but sealed and stuffed with rich, melty fillings.

In my opinion, this place checks all the boxes for the perfect piadina: tasty, massive, and affordable.

The recommended restaurants truly enhanced our experience in San Marino, with exceptional food and atmosphere.
