San Marino Food:
Local Cuisine and National Dishes

San Marino and nearby Romagna have a serious claim to the title of best food in Italy - and we’re not the only ones saying it.

Top publications like The Financial Times, The Guardian, and Forbes have praised Romagna as Italy’s ultimate culinary region.
And we agree. From tagliatelle and piadina to some of the best pizza spots around, San Marino is small… but mighty.

Where to try real Romagna classics

  1. Ritrovo dei Lavoratori

Tucked away in San Marino’s historic centre - just off the main streets - this cosy spot has been our go-to for authentic Romagna cuisine since our teenage years.

Start with the mixed antipasti (our top pick), then dive into some incredible pasta or a flavour-packed meat grill
- or both, if you're feeling indulgent!

Bonus: the setting is lovely, with charming views to match the food.

My favourite Pizza spot

  1. Insolito Posto

Located in Serravalle square, in the northern part of San Marino and within easy reach of Rimini, this pizza spot is perfect if you want to eat like a local and escape the main touristy areas.

It serves authentic Romagna-style pizza: slightly thinner than the usual, and generously topped.

Bonus: the restaurant’s name, Insolito Posto, literally means “Unusual Place”!

The best Piadina

  1. Il Mattarello

Located in Dogana, near Ausa Park and close to San Marino’s border, this casual spot is a great choice if you’re going for a walk or just passing by by car as you enter or leave the country.

It offers delicious piadine (our typical flatbread) and cascioni - similar to piadina but sealed and stuffed with rich, melty fillings.

In my opinion, this place checks all the boxes for the perfect piadina: tasty, massive, and affordable.
